Head and neck conditions

The head and neck include important nerves that control sight, smell, hearing, and the face. As a trained Otolaryngologist, Dr Setoaba surgically treats infectious diseases, both benign and malignant (cancerous) tumours, facial trauma, and deformities of the face.

Head and neck cancer

Head and Neck Cancer is used to describe a variety of malignant tumours which develop in the mouth (Oral Cavity), throat (pharynx), voice box (Larynx), salivary glands and the nose and sinuses. Tumours or lumps around the head and neck can arise due to several factors. In most cases, those arising from/within the skin are non-cancerous (benign), but on occasion, such growths may become cancerous (malignant). Early diagnosis and treatment is the best way to successfully treat these conditions. If you notice any lumps or tumours around your head or neck, contact Dr Setoaba promptly for treatment.

Head and neck surgery

Dr Setoaba uses head and neck surgery to treat a variety of problems of the head and neck. Many patients with cancer in the head or neck receive surgery to remove tumours and cancerous tissue. Reconstructive surgery is also an important treatment to regain a natural appearance after some cancer surgeries.

Conditions that can be treated with head and neck surgery:

  • Head and neck cancer
  • Pinched nerves
  • Intense motions sickness and dizziness
  • Pressure on the spinal cord
  • Upper spinal issues
  • Sinus pain
  • Chronic ear infections
  • Snoring and sleep apnea
  • Tonsil issues
  • Jaw issues
  • Thyroid conditions
  • Head and neck injuries

Recovery from head and neck surgery

Recovery time depends on the type of surgery. Neck dissections to remove tumours may take two to three days in the hospital if there are no complications. Other surgeries require that you stay up to one week in the hospital.

Most patients will need assistance after being discharged from the hospital. You will probably feel very tired for about a week after surgery. After the initial surgery, some patients may need reconstructive surgery to regain a natural look to their neck and face. Some patients with head or neck cancer also may need chemotherapy or radiation. Other patients may need rehabilitation services, such as speech therapy.

Speak with Dr Setoaba about what to expect after surgery. She will provide you with information for the best recovery process for you.
